You're a Thief?

It's been a while since I've offered an opinion about anything that I've been reading. Maybe there's a reason for that. Unfortunately the only one that I can offer is that I haven't read anything that has struck me as worthwhile to mention. But sometimes there is something new that sparkles. Shiny things can tempt even the most restrained person at times.  And I am certain you all know how much I love shiny things.

Thieves Finding Paradise
A.C. Logan
152 Pages(Adobe Reader File)

To start off I will be honest. I had no idea what I was getting into when I started to read this book. In fact I was slightly surprised by the angle as the story progressed. 25 chapters in I was still wondering what the characters true intents may be. But the fast pacing and the interesting variety of situations are bound to keep a readers interest. I personally read the whole thing in one night, lets say about 5 or 6 hours.

The story revolves around two characters, Alison and Cole. They're very different people, and neither one is really developed and presented as the central character at the very start of the book. In my opinion you could look at it either way. Cole could be the main character. Or Alison can be. In my opinion it is dependent on which character the reader has more of a relation to. I personally wanted to spank some common sense into Alison, but I won't explain why that would be giving spoilers.

But I will offer a few key sparks. There is fashion involved, and not every day run way fashion either. It's experimental scientific type fashion. There are explosions. There are gun fights. There are bad guys, and there are.... well... bad guys that are good guys that could be bad guys.

Another interesting thing is that there is a BDSM type theme is recurrent throughout. To be honest though it is not written in an offensive manner. In fact the book itself offers a rather amusing twist with some of it's scientific adages to the idea of restraint. A variety of instances and situations offer the reader various types of ideas and events to ponder. Not only that, it's not presented in a detrimental fashion.

But is there sex? Depends on how you look at it. The book seems to have a fade to black type of approach when it actually comes down to the deed itself. Meaning that, while there are situations that may be sexually charged, the reader is not forced to wade through a sex scene. This is not saying that they would be an unwelcome part to the plot, but they are not necessary to have an enjoyable reading experience.I personally found it enjoyable without the gratuitous sex.

This piece is recommended for adult readers. The content is a bit much for a younger reader, although given the prevalence of Fifty Shades of Gray in the media it may not be a bad choice for readers of that series. As it might give them a bit more to think about. Again it's an unrealistic situation, but by far it isn't as romantic and might make them see that there is more depth to a scene. I will also say that the targeted readership for the piece appears to be unisex. It is not written in such a manner that it would appeal more to a female or male audience. Which is in a way surprising. So if you're looking for a different read, head on over and give this book a shot, you just might like it.

Moving Mainstream?

It baffles me to no end the way that Shades of Grey has been snapped up by various outlets. The book series is very popular, and although it doesn't necessarily present a positive or factual scenario; It has brought the idea of BDSM type activities into a brighter light. I can accept that the movie industry is thinking about making a movie out of it. Popular literature is an appealing source for them, because they have a pre-made target audience and don't have to hope that there is a niche for them.

But this, I wasn't expecting. *points at the cropped photo from her phone*

Yes, they're moving to accessories already. Cutsey t-shirts, underpants, jewelry and thigh high stockings of various sorts are what I saw when I investigated the display in the store. It's not really anything too bad, but are they blurring lines that they ought to leave alone? There are people that are figuring that the books are something to base ideas and activities around. That isn't a bad thing.

But there are lifestylers that may find it annoying to see some things used so flippantly. There are a lot of people that just think that they're dealing with a fashion statement, or expressing their adoration for the interesting "Mr. Grey". But unlike Harry Potter fans, Grey fans may find themselves in some interesting conversations. These can be uncomfortable for both parties involved.

So what I'm trying to get at is this: know what you're wearing. Think about the multi-facets that something can express. Educate yourself on symbolism, and don't be afraid to express yourself. But don't expect everyone to see what you're wearing and interpret it to mean what you've intended it to. So please, I know a number of you DO know what you are doing, and you are all (I think anyways) adults and entitled to do as you like. But take into mind the message your choices may send to those around you.

There are many beautiful things available to accessorize and express yourself. I personally have a set of neon rainbow plastic bamboo look bracelets. I was trounced after work one night (rl) by a group of gay men who felt that if I wasn't gay I shouldn't be wearing them. I had a very long discussion with them, and after we went on our ways. I won't forget it because they seemed slightly hostile at first, but calmed down as we discussed why I wear them. This is only an example of what I mean though. Am sure a number of folk have their own experience, good and bad.

Please have good ones.

Thoughts on Fifty Shades Of Grey

I never planned to read this book. I agreed to because opinions were asked for on the matter, and the only way to form an opinion and understanding about a book is to read it. After reading the first book to this three part series I am left understanding why it is that people might find it both appealing and offensive. On a whole the piece is complex, but written in a manner that pulls a reader in. We want to know what is happening to our characters, and we want to see them go through their actions. So before we even get into my thoughts on this first book, I am going to say that yes. Yes I think I will read the next book. Perhaps it will give a fuller reflection on things.

Fifty Shades Of Grey
EL James
356 pages

First off, I am going to say that the main characters shine. Each of them are presented not as flat, but as vibrant creatures with a deeper existence. They each have their reasons to hesitate, and they each have their reason to want to move forward in the relationship that is the focus of the book. Ana is our lead female character. Christian is our lead male character. The other characters are also very vibrant and I personally felt drawn into the book because of this.

The book itself though is best described as a harlequin romance novel on crack. It has the feel of a modern fairytale. In all honesty, it isn't a realistic situation. But it is a fiction piece so that is to be expected.  The thing that I can see having upset some people is the romanticized feel. It is written from the perspective of Ana, and at times it feels like a diary. We are never issued the perspectives or thoughts from other characters, other than what they may have said, or how she viewed them. It is very one sided in that respect.

I really think that having a copy of the supposed contract smack dab in the middle of the book was a bit annoying, and gives a false lead  to those who might be interested in this kind of situation. It is a whirlwind of activity in this book, and things move far to quickly. It is very unrealistic, and that said readers should be wary of what they think of parts of the book. There are a lot of things that are far from normal when it comes to BDSM, and there is no reason that this book should be used as a way to measure a relationship. In fact, if you're actually interested in BDSM as more than just something to read about for giggles, this book is  NOT for you.

Why do I say that? Well, it's not meant to be educational. It's meant to entice the imagination and give some of us  fluffy fuzzy thoughts. Of course, the situation would not seem fluffy to most people, but there are some of us to which this kind of book and parts of the situation are appealing. And I feel like I'm chasing my tail now.

In all honesty, after finishing the book. There's a few points I would like to express. Fans will likely disagree with me, but I already said that I do plan to read book two, to see how this may pan out. My first point is this, if you take out the contract and the proposed "room of pain", you are left with the kind of relationship many of us would call a high school stalker relationship. It's very high school-esque, but that makes it an easy read.

The book is definitely aimed at mature readers. But the unfortunate reality is that there are dozens of teens and tweens that are going to get a hold of this because of the hype, and parents not being discerning. If you are thinking about letting your teenager read this book, or see them doing so PLEASE read it, and feel free to explain to them that it is a work of fiction. It is not fact in the slightest.

Sim Review: Paradise on Eclipse at Ocean Pearl

I want to introduce all you lovely readers to a new sim opening.  The owners are two lovely people I would consider good friends, CrimsonSentinal and Marion (Beauty8000).  Paradise on Eclipse is a lovely, multifaceted sim for role play (and just fun) that the pair have spent a lot of time on - and it shows, in the good way!  The rules for this adult sim are simple: act like the considerate adults we are supposed to be; derezz pose balls when you are finished with them; please keep scripts below 100; donate, if you can, as the sim is a free-to-visit area; and a few items are group-only, which can be gained from the landing zone link or by asking Marion.  While not much to remember in the least, there is the added benefit that the landing zone will offer you the code of conduct, as well, helping keep what few things they ask of their visitors fresh in your mind.

When you land, you will be situated smack outside the maze, which is a lovely place to be, as it is pretty central to most of the sim, and has a quick list of the other locations and where they can be found.  Paradise is rather unique in that there are four completely unique areas to explore and visit - five, if you count the maze, which can use it's fair share of exploration.  There are wonderful scenes and secrets in the twists and turns, and just exploring can be a fun way to while away the time.  I found a painting scene that is beautifully situated for photograph and as a place to park your avi for some quiet contemplation.

Behind you when you land, you'll find the Beach House, a wonderful spot aimed at gathering.  There are all kinds of games and group activities - borrowable vehicles, arcades, bowling, a giant chess and domino set, a TV for group members, volleyball... It's aimed as a place to bring your friends, or your lover, and have a good time.  My personal recommendation is to pick out one of the outdoor furniture places, or one of the beach huts on the islands, turn your sun to sunset, and enjoy the view - it's absolutely gorgeous.

Off to the right of the Beach House, one can see some forested Mountains and a gorgeous waterfall - and then there are the hidden secrets here, as well.  The pond doubles as a spot for mermaids, along with the merquarium, with beautiful fish and ducks on the surface, and up at the top is both a gorgeous scenic view of the rest of the sim and a mini-pool.  Across the bridge is a picnic blanket perfect for cuddles, and the winding trek down to the forest below, with it's own hiking paths and tree-lined sitting areas.  Those with rezzable horses are actually INVITED to use them here, and there are hidden spots for romantic lovers near the small falls bridge.  For those who are more adventuresome (moi!), the mountains are not a hard climb, totally fun to run through, and give some wonderful views of the rest of the sim.

And now, I saved this for last, simply because I love them so!  For those willing to explore the maze, your prizes await, for my own personal favorites lay through that gateway.  First is the BDSM Village.  Now, I won't lie - there is a bit of a fear in me for this one, because I am not a blatant kind of girl, and it is very obvious as soon as you walk to the edge of town what kind of village this is.  The public play arena makes it hard to miss, as are the feeding areas and such for pony-girls.  However, the sheer beauty of the old-timey village helps me to forget that.  Between the maze exit and the village lay an archery range, and a treasure chest of gifts from the owners.  Inside the buildings are a blacksmiths forge, a tavern, and even a form of apothecary/surgery that I just love, just to name a few.  And yes, for those seeking play, there are fully-functioning pose balls all over the place: just clean up after yourselves!  This is a PERFECT spot for rp that the old fans of the village could love, though guys will have the new challenge of bringing their captive with them, or rping their way into her panties - er, heart.  I totally meant to say heart.  The bows here are meant for boards, not backsides!

At the top of the hill is an even better treat for BDSM fans - The Mansion.  This thing is filled with secrets from top to bottom, from the wonderful collection of artwork on every floor to the fully functioning dungeon in the basement - complete with the trap door hidden in the master's study, which is itself hidden behind the secret bookcase entrance.  Think of it as the added delights to fire your blood and twist your panties for getting through the maze.  Remember, this is through the Southern exit, then up the hillside steps! ;)

And while I know I'll have lost most of my readers at the description of the village, I saved my own personal favorite for last: The Enchanted Forest, through the maze's North exit.  For anyone who loves fantasy as much as this elf, this is the place you want to be!  Tree top carousels, an elven hut, a mermaid spot hidden inside a beautiful waterfall, a giant flower... this area is just gorgeous!  This spot invites rp, plus hanging out with friends - there is a fun trivia game in the hut, with all kinds of options for the questions.  One of the owners recommended to me the Grimm Brother's one, which tickles my fancy.  Most of all, my favorite thing for this location is photography!  All kinds of textures and colors, with the sunbeams and sparkles and fairies, that just lend a magical glow to your photos that make them almost look retouched - or a simple, gorgeous background through the elven hut windows, or one of the many benches and cushions, for those who just want a beautiful location and soft lighting.

/me ends gushing rant.  So, yes.  My personal take on Paradise on Eclipse.  Now, I won't lie - the areas are very distinct, which will separate people to some degree, but this can be good, too.  To my view, the Enchanted Forest and the Village invite more serious role playing consideration, the Mansion is definite hard-core for the sex games, with the village just below, the Mountain Forest is more lightweight and romantic, and the Beach House seems more general gathering - kind of an ooc spot in the midst of the role playing.  Now, that is just my take, and certainly not owner's rules!  Role play and OOC can and probably will be done everywhere, and there is a lot of chance for variety.  The other side is that the sim can sometimes lag-steal you and does take a while to load, simply because there is so much stuff.  It looks gorgeous and is dressed to the nines, but I highly recommend giving yourself plenty of load time for your first arrival, and then taking each area piece by piece as it loads - maybe break it into chunks for exploration, until everything is up and running, then go for the real fun.  Personally, the lag is not bad at all once it loads, and I think the beauty is well worth the wait.

Moreover, the sim has friendly owners, a lot of options, and the roleplay potential is incredible, catering to all tastes and levels, from medieval to fantasy to modern (the TV in the beach house lounge definitely invites lounge lizards of all styles).  With no meter, you can come in OOC and explore, or rp to your heart of any type - be a villain, a master, a slave, a free woman, an elf, a demon, a demicorn, a satyr: whatever you dream to be.  Just please note that, if you're going to be especially vicious, make such clear in OOC or such that this is role play, and respect rules others may set as to what they are comfortable with!  The sim is officially opening Friday the 7th, and the owners have set up a challenging hunt through the areas as a great way to greet visitors, to go along with other freebies to try out.  This girl recommends go, see the sights, take some pictures, try out what the sim has to offer - and say a kind hi and thanks to Marion and Crimson if you see them around.
