Building Avatar Appearance : HAIR

Hair is an element of the SL avatar that many people are very picky about. There's a good reason for this. Hair is a very noticeable element of an avatar. People will create an opinion about you by your hair. First impressions and all that jazz.

So what kinds of hair are there in sl? On the most part there is sculpted, flexie, and mesh hair. Each style has it's pro's and cons. And each one can be appealing for different reasons.  You can pick a hair that speaks about what your avatar is, or let it be a way to express you're ideas.

Sculpted hair, or hair that is constructed from multiple prims is not always going to look the best. Many examples of hair like this can be seen in the old SL libraries. This hair frequently does not move, which makes this hair type the one that is most likely to seem as though it is going extinct soon. It is good for photo's and for creating a distinct style though.

Flexie hair, is very common now. It's the hair that we see that flows and moves when an avatar walks around or dances. The hair has a type of give and bounce, giving it an almost realistic feel. Flexie hair has a tendency to go through an avatar when it moves though, meaning although it looks and flows nice, there are times when it can look surreal.

Mesh hair, is newer. It is a work in progress, but many people have a lot of nice things to say about it. It moves with your avatar, so there is no "through" where the hair might bounces through your avatar. BUT mesh hair doesn't bounce the same way as the flexie hair does. It has a tendency to look as though it is sticking to your body.

Anyway, those are some of the types of hair to consider. The next thing you want to decide, is what color and style you'd like. These factors will play a part in deciding what is going to work best for your avatar. What I would recommend, no matter what style you are thinking of selecting, try out a demo first. Make sure that you know for sure if the hair will fill and act the way that you are hoping. Short or long it doesn't matter, as long as you are happy with your look.

Building Avatar Appearance : Skin

Skin is again a very important part of an avatar. And they can come in many types. There are fantasy skins, realistic skins, and just about whatever kind of look you can imagine. This post is NOT an advertisement for any specific skin maker. It is intended to offer a sampling of some of the skins that can be found in second life to use as a character base. So with that in mind feel free to keep reading.

There are many different skin makers and each one has it's own appeal for those creating a 'look'. We all want to be eccentric and be special. Check out the skins below, and feel free to look up the stores in world if there's a style that you like. Remember these skins are just a sampling of the ones available in world, and there's some AMAZING skins in there.

Fallen Gods

[Void]

Aeva/Heartsick

TLB (The Little Bat)

Nomine

cStar Limited

Modish

Skinthesis

As stated above, these are only some of the skins that can be found in world. Feel free to explore and find skins that allow you to express yourself. You do NOT have to settle for just one skin, you can have as many as you want and switch between them if it suits you. Please keep in mind that skins will appear different on different shapes.

Shopping VS Hunting

In Second Life there are a variety of ways to dress your avatar. You can be just about anything that you want to be, as am sure you've realized by now. Today we're going to look at the pro's and con's of two different ways in which to outfit your avatar. Shopping and Hunting. I know that it sounds a bit peculiar to think of hunting as a way to outfit your avatar, but it'll be explained well enough for you to understand.

Second Life clothing and avatars can get to be a fairly expensive hobby if you're not ready to be a content creator yourself. We're not all creative art talents, some of us are writers, and others are scriptwriters. While a large number of us wish nothing more than to rp and pay dress up. Playing dress up can get costly, and it can be daunting. How can you look different without spending so much?

This is where scavenger hunts and store events come in. There are a number of grid wide hunts that happen in Second Life, and the prizes vary. They can be everything from a pose, to a whole avatar. Unlike shopping though, there is no guarantee that you will like everything that you receive in a  hunt. But you're not spending nearly as much by doing a hunt as you would by shopping. The biggest thing you're likely to spend during a hunt is time.

You will find out that there are stores that you shop at, that do participate in hunts. This is  a good way to slowly decide if scavenger hunts are for you. Some of them are very difficult, and I personally recommend hunting with a friend, or even in a group. Why? Because it can be more fun and you'll cover more ground that way.

This is just some food for thought. Shopping is by far the more reliable method to get exactly what you want. But a hunt, will usually add some unique pieces to your wardrobe, that over time are generally unavailable.  So here's to happy hunting, whether it's for a deal or for an item.

Building Avatar Appearance : Shape

One of the most important things you will ever select or create for your second life avatar it your shape. Second Life, like real life is full of many different kinds of people. This means that there are many different views on what is appealing or desirable. Not just that though, the opinions on the matter are always in flux and change frequently. Second Life enables us to change our appearance with ease though, which makes this an interesting thing to think about.

Shapes come in many sizes, and there are pro's and cons to different ones. These should be evaluated before you make a decision about what you want to look like. People tend to become accustomed to how a body looks, so your main shape is the one that you should be most concerned about. Your main shape is the one that you are going to be wearing most of the time. So your shape is going to help you decide what and who you are going to be.

First things first is the decision about whether you're going to be male or female. This is important because in the appearance settings there are some different things that can be altered on the body. Not only that sl does react differently with different body types. It's not too noticable to everyone, but there are those wonderful things called a body physics layer now. Body physics give the sl avatar a slightly liquid movement along the torso of the form. Butts and breasts bounce. It's not a necessity, but it can be an amusing thing to see.

Anyway, once you've decided whether you're going to be male or female the next important thing to contemplate is your height. As it is very important on some sims. There are some sims that will not grant you entry if you are considered too short in their opinion. So keep this in mind as you work on creating your avatar, and making your digital you.

Second life shapes are all created by following a listing of numbers in the body parts section of your appearance section. It can seem a bit daunting at first, but there's no rush for perfection if you want to make your own shape. But you will want to watch and test what you've got. Your shape will look different at times depending on the kind of skin that you're wearing on it. Which is another thing to keep in mind but we will be looking at skins another day.

Shapes can be noticeably different. As you can see in the image below showing six different female shapes. They're all in the same pose, so it's very easy to note differences in torso length, slight differences in facial structure, and changes in the neck. Another reason for shapes being different is at times you may want to construct a different character. There are some people who construct role play characters on their account and change their entire look.

Female characters are admittedly much easier to work with in world. Mostly because of the prevalence of clothing and accessories for females.  But a well thought out and constructed male character can be very impressive. Where a female avatar is often curvy, a male avatar has different aspects in which to grow. Is he going to be muscular? Is he tall or shorter? Thin? Muscular or just an everyday being? Some of these elements can be brought to the viewers attention with more definition by applying a good looking skin to a shape. But if the shape doesn't have any sort of definition itself the skin won't look very good.

Another thing to think about, which I don't know as much about is mesh avatars. A mesh avatar can actually have it's own shape, and present your avatar in a very different manner than sl's traditional format. You can be a petite avatar, which is very tiny usually. There are some interesting doll avatars, and some uniquely shaped avatars which are all constructed in the mesh manner. These move differently than an avatar that's shape is built up using the basic second life avatar and prim extensions. But mesh avatars don't have unique shapes really, they're usually the same as the other mesh avatars of their breed.

All the shapes shown in this article are available from Abonwood Studios. They offer a variety of shapes to those looking for a fine tuned shape, and are frequently creating new ones. The shape sculptor has done a variety of shapes, I was quite impressed by her female dwarf shape recently. It's rare that you see a good shape for one that seems believable.
